Hacking MySpace

Well it seems that Myspace are adding new filters and updates quite a lot in the past few months. Although these new updates and filters are small I thought it would be a good idea to let people know about them.

There are two main updates that I want to outline in this post; links opening in a new window/tab and the project playlist being blocked from profiles.

I’m not sure if this is a permanent update or not, but it seems that Myspace have been playing around with their codes and decided that all links people put on their page should open in a new tab/window (which in my opinion is just stupid, very bad for accessibility not to mention annoying users).

This hasn’t had an official Myspace mod saying anything about it (so it might not be a permanent update), it was just something I noticed when I edited my own profile.

Project Playlist

The official statement put out by Myspace about this was:

“Your Project Playlist widget has been removed from your profile in response to copyright complaints. We are sorry for the inconvenience, but it is absolutely imperative that MySpace respect the rights of copyright owners, artists and record labels.”

This is not to say that Project Playlist players will be blocked forever, just until their legal situation changes (i.e. they start paying royalties to the artists for playing their music).

You can still use players from elsewhere such as last.fm or Myspace music so if your player has been removed, just use one of these legal players and it’ll be fine.

In some cases where the player has been removed there will be “..” put in place of it, you can just remove this via editing the section of your profile that it’s in, just like any other time codes have been filtered on Myspace.
