Over the past week or so I have been asked by quite a few people how the new profile 2.0 has increased privacy/security settings and how to set them up. This is something that can benefit a lot of people by me explaining it, so I decided I would today.
Recently I couldn’t believe some of the questions I was getting about the new privacy options (e.g. “Where are they?”). I guess I naturally assumed that people who were actually interested in their privacy online would be quite Internet savvy and would therefore be able to have a spare 10 minutes or so to play around with new Myspace settings and work them out for themselves. I was of course wrong, there are a lot of people who are concerned about their online privacy who are quite Internet illiterate, and this is not a bad thing, I believe that everyone should be concerned about online privacy to an extent.
Where are they?
I couldn’t have started off with a better question.
Well, it’s all in the “customize profile” part of “edit profile” now, but where now I hear you ask? Well it’s hard to put into words, so here is a picture:
As you can see, you click the little pencil looking image on whichever module you want to edit the settings for, change them and then save your changes. This means that you can choose to show certain parts of your profile to certain groups of people, for example your about me could be shown to everyone, whereas your top friends and comments could only be shown to your friends.
You can also completely remove modules from your profile, so for example if you don’t want anyone else viewing your comments then all you need to do is remove that section of your profile (by clicking the “X” in the right hand corner).
These are the great new privacy settings that profile 2.0 has to offer, you may not think it’s much but when you actually think about it, these features will help a lot of people protect their own privacy on Myspace and is one reason I quite like the new profile 2.0.

I’m confused about the blog privacy settings. I found the “pencil” settings for the module, but when I go to post an entry, the old settings are still there, Public (the default), Diary, Friends, and Preferred List. If I want my blog read by the people in the categories I checked in the pencil settings, what do I do with the settings on the entry page, if anything? This is driving me more nuts than it probably should.
Thank you for your time.

Hi Holly,
You’d need to go into each blog and change the privacy settings for them individually (as far as I am aware there isn’t a setting that will set them all to whatever privacy setting you wanted).
The “pencil” settings for the module are for the module on your profile only, it doesn’t change the sub-pages in that module (e.g. blogs).

Oh! Well that’s not nearly so convenient as I thought, then. But thanks for letting me know.

Sorry not a fan of the new set up I am sticking with 1.0 much better as I build my pages in dreamweaver. 2.0 helps those who have little tech skills but 1.0 can have code added to block rubbish.

I tried to change back to 1.0, because I dont like 2.0 at all, but when I click the “Go Back” button, it just says start from scratch. There is no change back to 1.0 option.

I don’t like the new 2.0 at all. I’m sure there are some great features but for now I am going to stick to the older version. I am hoping that you are working on a new edition of Hacking MySpace.
