Despite all the damfangled widgets available today, playing music on your MySpace profile is still one of the best ways of entertaining visitors to your MySpace profile, and helping people understand listening tastes.

HotListMaker allows you to select music tracks from a library of more than 1 million tracks, and create a playlist - “HotList”, that you can then post on your MySpace profile (or personal web site or blog).
According to HotListMaker, you can then ”watch the lists sparkle new conversations and connect you with music fans”. And yes, the site is legal. The company behind HotListMaker, has a relationship with Canadian music store Puretracks.
Creating your HotList is very straight forward; you simply select your tracks, personalize your HotList (add some labels and select a color scheme) and publish it to your site. To be able to create HotLists you need to create an account, which does involve leaving your email address.
The only real problem with HotListMkaer is that in order to actually listen to songs, visitors have to click on a link that opens up a pop up. Given that other music sites allow you to embed code that allows you to actually play the music directly from your profile, this is a somewhat of a disadvantage. With the buy link so prominent in rge HotList widget, I also wonder whether the advertising content is a little too prominent.

My personal experience with this and other “album cover” styles, has been useless.
The best thing you can do, is head on over to playlist.com or known to the noobs as projectplaylist.com, wich I am a huge part of the up-bringing and development of.
We had a hard time getting myspace to accept our new approach, but since we got started two years ago, we have came a long way.
Any questions on formating your playlist.com player to fit into more compact spaces, send me a message on MySpace.

This is a great idea but it adds to bulk of advertisements and “redirect links” on myspace pages. And what’s more is that it doesn’t have to.
As a music lover I constantly share the music I’m currently listening to. I can tell viewers that I like this music (and if they share similar interests they might too). And I don’t mind telling people about a store I like to buy from. But I’m not trying to sell them the CD (well … unless I can benefit from it). So what would I like to see? The “Buy” link moved to the album image or album name!
As for the redirect to play music …
Well for starters if redirected to an amazon page I would have an option to select others songs that I wanted to sample. Secondly, while puretracks seems to be drawing viewers to a new area where their content can be clearly seen apart from other adds on a page, lets face it … that’s a huge amount of popup screen space for a little song sample and not even a link to buy the CD (that’s where you need your “Buy” link folks).
