Kiko is a free online calendar that allows you to create widgets to publicize and share events through your MySpace profile.
It’s relatively easy to create your own event widgets. The first stage is that you enter details about your event, the start time, finish time, start date, location, web site, notes and time zone.
In the next screen you’ll be able customize the look of the widget by selecting a background image (or providing your own), selecting colors, and choosing whether to show a countdown and/or comments.
You are then provided with code to place in your MySpace profile or a friend’s comment section, though over services, such as hi5, Xanga, and Friendster, are also supported. Some really good instruction for inserting the code in your profile are provided, which makes the whole process much easier for people new to MySpace.
As you can see from the widget above, visitors to your profile can indicate that they’re going to come with your event, or they can add a comment.
Back at the Kiko site you can access a calendar where you can keep track of all your appointments and events – kind of like an online Outlook. Interestingly you can even offer RSS feeds so that others can be kept up to date with what you’re doing.
The service works well, but I’m not sure of when someone might actually use it. Your social networking profile is very public, and most events are private - you’re not going to invite all of your MySpace friends to an event unless of course you have a private profile that only your friends can view.
Interesting concept, I’m just not sure how useful it is in practice.
