A couple of weeks ago Sheila from Cos Productions posted a question on the support forum wanting to know how to get her authors’ books onto the Top Books list at MySpace Books. At the time it wasn’t obvious how it worked. Luckily Nick has worked it out. Thanks Nick!
The top books list is based on how many people link to a particular book from their Myspace blog.
To help a book get on the list, you’ll need to post a blog on on your MySpace profile and link to the book.
For example, if you wanted to help me promote my book (hint, hint), you would do the following:
When posting a blog, you’ll see a little section at the bottom of the window that says “Tell us what you’re reading, viewing, listening to (see below). Select “Reading (Books)” from the drop-down menu, and click on the search button.
In the window that appears, ensure the Books category is showing, and type “Hacking MySpace” into the little text box, before clicking on the search button. You’ll get a list of titles that match your search (courtesy of Amazon) and hopefully my book should be the only book that appears (see below). Click on the ”post on my blog” link.
You can then finish writing your blog.
By the way, initially I couldn’t get the book search function to work (it just locked up). If you have this problem you may have to upgrade your version of JAVA.
If you have any other marketing tips, or just want to talk MySpace, don’t forget to check out the support forums at http://www.myspaceismyplace.com/forum/index.php

The blog search for the book isn’t working for me, and I even installed the new Java. I guess I’ll just post the amazon ad in my blog.

Weird! Are you using Firefox or Explorer? If you’ve got both installed, and only tried one, try the other…

I am devouring this book, John. I’m a non-geek, and you are answering precisely the questions I didn’t even know how to ask. This is brilliant. I’m very grateful. Your own mental CSS is entirely well organized and seems to have no broken links. And myspaceismyplace is one of the very best sites I’ve seen. It’s generous, well laid out, easy to read, and I feel quite at home. I will most certainly link to your book through my MySpace blog.

Thank you for addressing my question. The next one is, now that I’ve had several people post in order to have a book show up on the list, why isn’t it showing?
We followed the instructions, but the book never got onto the list. And, with over 20 different MySpace users doing this, I’m sure the book would have hit their list. Yet, it’s not there.
Any ideas?
